Amsterdam in April: A 3-Day Spring Guide to the Venice of the North
April in Amsterdam is a magical transition. The city shakes off the winter chill, the canals sparkle under the spring sun, and the tulip season is in full bloom. However, if you are planning a trip to the Dutch capital in spring, there are a few practicalities—and hidden gems—you need to know to make the most of your stay.
The Weather: Sunny, Breezy, and Unpredictable
Don't let the bright photos fool you; Amsterdam’s weather is the definition of "variable." While you’ll likely enjoy plenty of sunshine, the wind coming off the North Sea and the canals can be biting.
-
Temperature
Expect daytime highs, but evenings quickly drop to around 8–10°C.
-
Packing Essentials
A windshell or a lightweight, waterproof transitional jacket is non-negotiable and the bottle for a hot tea or coffee.
-
The Pro Tip
If you plan on staying near the water or taking a canal cruise, a hat is essential. The wind is significantly sharper by the docks.
Arrival & Getting Around: Seamless and Smart
Amsterdam Schiphol remains one of the best-organized airports in the world. Getting to the city center is a breeze:
-
The Train
Skip the taxis. Take the train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal. It costs only €5, runs every 20 minutes, and drops you right in the heart of the city.
-
Buses & Trams
Forget looking for ticket kiosks. Amsterdam has fully embraced the future: you don't buy physical tickets for the bus anymore. Simply tap your credit/debit card when you enter and tap again when you exit.
It’s incredibly easy.
-
The Ferries
If you're heading to the North (NDSM district), remember that the ferries behind Centraal Station are completely free.
Hydration: Your Travel-Bottle’s Best Friend
As a traveler carrying a reusable bottle, Amsterdam is a dream. The Dutch are proud of their tap water, and for good reason—it’s some of the cleanest in Europe.
- Airport Refills: You won’t find many "dedicated" water dispensers at Schiphol. Why? Because the tap water in the bathrooms is perfectly drinkable.
- City Life: The same applies to houses and hotels.
- Eating Out: Don't be shy! I asked several restaurants to refill my bottle during my stay, and no one ever refused. It is the standard here to help travelers stay hydrated.
3 Days in Amsterdam: The Perfect Itinerary
-
Day 1: Art and the Magic of the Canals
Start your journey at the Rijksmuseum. Give yourself at least 3 hours to truly appreciate it. After the museum, I highly recommend an afternoon canal cruise. It lasts about 90 minutes and allows you to discover many beautiful, hidden spots of the city that you simply can't see from the street.
-
Day 2: The Spring Essential (Keukenhof)
You cannot visit in April without seeing the Keukenhof Gardens. It’s the quintessential spring experience.
- Booking: You must buy your tickets several days in advance; they sell out fast during the tulip peak.
- Travel: It’s a 1.5-hour journey from central Amsterdam, but it is also very easy to reach directly from the airport if you want to visit on your way into the city.
-
Day 3: Street Art and Nightlife
My absolute "Discovery of 2026" is the STRAAT Museum in the NDSM district. To wrap up your trip, head to a performance by the legendary drag queen Cheri Cheri. It’s a high-energy, unforgettable way to experience Amsterdam’s inclusive and vibrant culture.
Featured Experiences - What you MUST know and where to go in Amsterdam
Rijksmuseum: A Date with the Dutch Masters
This isn't just a museum; it’s a journey through the Golden Age of Dutch art. While the building is massive, you can choose to focus on the key painters like Rembrandt and Vermeer. Standing in front of "The Night Watch" is a bucket-list experience. The way the museum is curated allows you to see the highlights in about 3 hours without feeling overwhelmed, leaving you just enough energy for a canal walk afterward.
STRAAT Museum: The Soul of NDSM
Located in a massive former warehouse at the NDSM wharf, STRAAT is a stunning tribute to international street art. It is easily my favorite discovery this year. The scale of the murals is breathtaking, and it gives street art the grand stage it deserves. To get there, take the free ferry from behind Centraal Station—the industrial vibe of the NDSM district is a fantastic contrast to the traditional canal houses.
Cheri Cheri: An Unforgettable Show
If you want to experience the true, joyful spirit of Amsterdam, you have to see a performance by Cheri Cheri. It’s an explosion of glitter, talent, and humor. This drag queen performance isn't just a show; it's a celebration of the city's legendary inclusivity. It’s the perfect way to spend your final night, surrounded by great music and an even better atmosphere.
Amsterdam in April is a city of contrasts—from the 17th-century grandeur of the Rijksmuseum to the modern graffiti of STRAAT. Just remember your windshell, keep your card ready for the bus, and keep that bottle filled!
